George Palliparampil, Bishop of Miao, has been appointed Ecclesiastical Advisor to Jesus Youth India during the 37th General Body Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) held in Bengaluru. The Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) congratulated the 72-year-old bishop on his new responsibility.
A member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Bishop Palliparampil has served in youth ministry and evangelization, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh. Fondly known in Northeast India as “Bishop P.K.,” he has been engaged in missionary work in the region for several decades, contributing significantly to the growth and strengthening of the Church’s outreach.
Currently, Bishop Palliparampil serves as Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Faith Formation. Within the Northeast region, he serves as Chairman of the Proclamation Commission. He earlier chaired the FABC Office for Evangelization and played a key role in hosting the Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025, an Asian Mission Congress held in Penang from November 27–30, 2025. The congress brought together approximately 900 delegates from 32 countries across Asia.
Born in 1954, Bishop Palliparampil was ordained a Salesian priest in 1982 and was appointed Bishop of Miao in 2006. Over the years, he worked closely with missionaries including Fr. Kulandaisamy and Fr. C.C. Jose in developing pastoral initiatives and expanding the Church’s mission presence in Arunachal Pradesh.
Jesus Youth
Jesus Youth is an international Catholic charismatic youth movement that began in Kerala in 1976. It was recognized by the CBCI in 2008 and received Vatican approval in 2016 as an International Private Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right. The movement focuses on faith formation, prayer, leadership training, evangelization, and social outreach among young people.
In India, the movement has been guided by successive Ecclesiastical Advisors appointed by the CBCI. Alex Vadakumthala previously served in this role before Bishop Palliparampil’s appointment. At the international level, the Ecclesiastical Advisor is Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.
In the Jesus Youth movement, the Ecclesiastical Advisor (also referred to as Episcopal Advisor) is a Catholic bishop appointed to provide spiritual guidance, pastoral oversight, and a formal link to the Church hierarchy. The advisor accompanies the national leadership, ensures fidelity to Church teaching, and maintains ecclesial accountability.
As Ecclesiastical Advisor to Jesus Youth India, Bishop Palliparampil will offer pastoral direction and guidance to the national leadership and members of the movement.
