Care for the poor must remain central to Christian life despite challenges, Pope Leo XIV said during an audience with the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities USA on May 4, 2026.

 Addressing the gathering, the Pope acknowledged the practical and personal difficulties faced by those engaged in charitable service. 

These include limited resources, the challenge of sustaining commitment, and the reality of not always being able to help everyone in need. 

“Caring for the poor is an integral part of authentic Christian living,” the Pope said. 

He also warned against discouragement, especially when efforts seem insufficient. 

Pope Leo noted that Catholic Charities USA, one of the largest social service networks in the United States, is not exempt from such challenges. 

“When we face obstacles, we must hear Jesus say, ‘I am with you always,’” he said. 

The Pope encouraged the organisation to continue its mission of compassion. He said their work seeks to “alleviate suffering, support families, and bring relief to those burdened by hardship.” 

He emphasised that Christian service must be rooted in the love of Christ. 

“It is the charity of Christ that must guide your work,” the Pope said. 

Reflecting on the spiritual dimension of charity, Pope Leo said that love for neighbour is a sign of genuine love for God. 

He added that those who serve the poor encounter Christ in those they assist. 

Catholic Charities USA includes more than 170 diocesan agencies and serves millions of people through social and humanitarian programmes. 

The Pope concluded by encouraging those involved in charitable work to remain rooted in hope. He reminded them that the Resurrection of Christ renews all things and gives strength to continue serving with faith and dedication.
