Itanagar, September 17, 2026: 

The Catholic community at Naharlagun Church in the Diocese of Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, marked the 76th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday evening with a special prayer service, seeking God’s blessings upon him and praying for the peace, unity and development of the nation.

Born on September 17, 1950, Narendra Modi turned 76 on September 17, 2026.

The prayer service brought together members of the Catholic community, people from different backgrounds and political leaders to pray for the Prime Minister, the nation and all those entrusted with public responsibility.

During the service, prayers were offered for the Prime Minister’s wisdom, strength, good health and discernment in carrying out his responsibilities and making decisions for the country. Prayers were also offered for the government and political leaders, that they may work for justice, peace, unity and the common good.

Reflecting on the responsibility that accompanies public authority, the community prayed that those entrusted with leadership may have the courage and wisdom to serve the people, particularly the vulnerable and those in need.

The service also included prayers for India, seeking peace, prosperity, harmony and social cohesion, and for people of different religions, cultures and communities to live together in mutual respect and cooperation.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop of Itanagar, Most Rev. Benny Varghese, said that the Church continually prays for the leaders of the nation and for those entrusted with public responsibility.

“The Church does not enter into politics,” the Bishop said, stressing that the Church’s role is to pray for politicians and leaders so that they may exercise their responsibilities wisely and serve the people well.

Recalling the Catholic community’s association with the people of Arunachal Pradesh, he said that praying for the country’s leadership is part of the Church’s responsibility as citizens and people of faith.

The prayer service concluded with a blessing and the lighting of candles before the majestic facade of Sacred Heart Church, Naharlagun, where a large birthday flex of the Prime Minister had been placed for the occasion.
