Education empowers women to become active decision-makers in families and agents of social transformation, said Father Mathew Anchukandam, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Guwahati, while addressing the Fourth Regional Conference of the Commission for Women of the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) in Guwahati
Delivering a session on “Education Shaping the Life of Women in Family and Society”, Fr. Anchukandam highlighted the essential role of education in strengthening women’s confidence, dignity, and leadership within families and communities.
“You are not simply passive observers in the family; you are active decision-makers,” he told over 250 women participants gathered from dioceses across Northeast India for the two-day conference being held at the Northeast Social Forum campus.
He said educated women are better prepared to guide children, support families in making responsible choices, and respond wisely to social and personal challenges. According to him, education is not only about academic qualifications but about developing the confidence and ability to think critically.
“When you are truly educated, you know exactly what to do. You are not sitting in darkness, but rather you know how to guide your family and society with confidence,” he said.
Reflecting on women’s role in society, Fr. Anchukandam stressed that education builds self-esteem and enables women to speak for justice and positive change.
He urged participants not to underestimate their capacity to influence family and community life.
“When women have self-confidence and self-esteem, they are able to stand up and say, ‘This is what is right for our family and society,’” he said.
The Vicar General also spoke about the importance of economic independence, observing that education provides women with opportunities for employment and financial security.
“Education helps women stand on their own feet. Financial independence gives dignity and security,” he noted, encouraging women to motivate younger generations to pursue meaningful education.
Calling for greater investment in the education of girls, Fr. Anchukandam said societies flourish when women are empowered.
“If you educate women, you will see society progress. Women are not less; they are equal partners in building families and communities,” he said.
The session formed part of the Fourth Regional Conference of the Commission for Women, organised by NEIRBC under the theme “Empowered Women in Service and Unity.” The gathering brought together women leaders and some religious sisters from across Northeast India to reflect on leadership, family life, and holistic development.
