The Funeral Eucharist was presided over by Bishop Albert Hemrom of Dibrugarh, Chairman of NESCOM, along with his predecessor, Bishop Emeritus Joseph Aind, and numerous priests and religious. The Bishop, in his homily, he expressed both sorrow and Christian hope. “We have lost a good, honest and devoted priest,” he said, assuring the faithful that “the Lord has called him to be with Him, and in this faith we stand united.
A detailed biographical tribute was read by Fr. William Horo, who recalled Fr. Tirkey’s 38 years of dedicated priestly ministry. “You served the Diocese with sincerity, dedication and faithfulness,” he said, highlighting his pioneering missionary work in Dhuria and his commitment to pastoral care across various parishes.
Speaking on behalf of Moran Parish, Fr. Robert Kachhua shared a deeply personal tribute, remembering Fr. Tirkey’s presence as “a great blessing” to the community. “You came not only to rest, but to do something new for the parish,” he said, noting his involvement in pastoral activities, village outreach, and his care for boarding children. “We will miss your beautiful songs, your deep voice, and your loving presence,” he added.
A condolence message, read on behalf of the religious community, described Fr. Tirkey as “a truly dedicated and zealous missionary priest whose life radiated the compassionate heart of Jesus.” The message further noted that “his simplicity, humility and closeness to people made everyone feel welcomed and valued.”
Family members also paid their respects, with his brother Mr. Jeevan Kishore Tirkey present among the bereaved, alongside relatives and well-wishers who gathered to offer their final homage.
Throughout the liturgy, the Church reaffirmed its faith in eternal life. It was proclaimed that Fr. Tirkey had “returned to his Creator in the love of God,” entrusting him to divine mercy.
Born on June 22, 1954, in present-day Chhattisgarh, Fr. Tirkey was ordained on May 15, 1988, and served tirelessly in the Diocese of Dibrugarh. Beyond his pastoral duties, he was known for promoting indigenous culture, encouraging traditional expressions of faith, and contributing to community health through herbal medicine and awareness initiatives.
Even in declining health, he remained committed to his vocation, serving faithfully in Moran parish until his final days.
As the Church commended his soul to God, the words of Scripture resonated deeply: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Fr. Nathaniel Tirkey leaves behind a legacy of missionary courage, pastoral charity, and humble service, inspiring the faithful across Northeast India.
