Pope Leo XIV has invited Catholics worldwide to deepen their commitment to the Church’s missionary mandate as preparations begin for the centenary celebration of World Mission Sunday, which will be observed on October 18, 2026.
Addressing participants of the General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies at the Vatican on June 1, the Holy Father highlighted the significance of the year, marking 100 years since Pope Pius XI established World Mission Sunday on the penultimate Sunday of October at the request of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
Pope Leo described World Mission Sunday as a moment dedicated to prayer, reflection, and support for the Church’s evangelising mission, particularly in regions where the Gospel is being proclaimed for the first time and where local Churches continue to grow. He noted that the annual observance also reminds established Christian communities of their responsibility to share in the universal missionary mission of the Church.
The Holy Father explained that contributions collected on World Mission Sunday enable the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith to assist more than 1,130 ecclesiastical jurisdictions under the Dicastery for Evangelization. These resources support pastoral initiatives, the development of Church infrastructure, and the formation of priests, religious, and missionaries serving young Churches across the world.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “One in Christ, United in Mission,” Pope Leo said it invites the faithful to foster deeper communion in Christ and greater participation in the Church’s mission of evangelisation. He encouraged all Catholics to embrace a renewed missionary spirit rooted in unity, prayer, and service.
The Pope also highlighted the invaluable contribution of the Pontifical Mission Societies in promoting evangelisation, supporting local Churches, and nurturing missionary vocations, particularly in regions affected by poverty, conflict, and social instability. He praised the work of the Pontifical Mission Society of the Holy Childhood and the Pontifical Mission Society of St. Peter the Apostle for their support of children, seminarians, and consecrated persons in mission territories.
Concluding his address, Pope Leo XIV entrusted the missionary work of the Church to the intercession of Mary, Queen of Missions, and encouraged the faithful to continue proclaiming Christ, the Prince of Peace, in a world marked by division and conflict.
