Reflecting on the significance of the day, the Holy Father expressed concern that many women around the world continue to face discrimination and violence from childhood onward.
“Many women are still discriminated against and subjected to various forms of violence,” the Pope said, adding that “to them, in a special way, go my solidarity and my prayers.”
Pope Leo also addressed the issue in the March edition of Piazza San Pietro magazine, responding to a reader’s question about violence against women. In his reflection, he called for a stronger alliance between schools and the Church to promote a “culture of respect” among young people and to counter attitudes that diminish the dignity of women.
In Northeast India, the occasion was marked with prayers and reflections across Church institutions.
Presiding over the jubilee celebration of the Holy Cross Sisters of Chavanod, the President of the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC), Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, offered prayers for women around the world, especially those living in difficult circumstances.
“Today is Women’s Day. We pray for women all over the world, especially those in difficult situations who suffer because of poverty, sickness, or war,” the Archbishop said.
He noted that women often carry greater responsibilities within families and communities and frequently bear the burden of hardship with resilience and dedication.
“We pray that the Lord may have mercy on all suffering women and those facing difficult situations, so that they may live with dignity and have their rights recognised,” he added.
International Women’s Day 2026 was observed across India on March 8 with programmes focused on empowerment and equality.
The national observance highlighted the campaign theme “#GiveToGain,” encouraging collective efforts to advance gender equality and support women’s development.
Across the country, events included awareness campaigns, seminars, and public initiatives such as the Shakti Walk along Kartavya Path in New Delhi. Programmes also highlighted women’s leadership and participation in fields such as technology, healthcare, sports, and entrepreneurship.
International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, recognises the contributions of women in society and calls for continued efforts to promote equality, dignity, and justice for women and girls worldwide.
