NESCOM, Guwahati, Feb. 18, 2026 — The Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr. Fabio Attard, has concluded his 13-day maiden visit to India, held from February 5 to 17, with programmes across the Salesian provinces of Kolkata, New Delhi and Chennai.
The visit focused on strengthening unity within Salesian communities and renewing commitment to youth ministry, education, and outreach—particularly among poor and vulnerable young people.
The visit began in the Kolkata Province, where engagements were linked to centenary celebrations. The Rector Major travelled to Siliguri and Azimganj, meeting members of the Salesian Family and interacting with young people and collaborators. The centenary observances concluded on February 8 with the installation of Fr. Sunil Kerketta as Provincial, followed by a Eucharistic celebration and cultural programme at Don Bosco Park Circus, Kolkata.
From February 9 to 13, the programme continued in the New Delhi Province, including visits to communities in the Chhotanagpur region. A significant highlight was the laying of the foundation stone for a new extension at Don Bosco School, Gumla, during its Silver Jubilee celebrations. The project was presented as an investment in expanding educational opportunities for underserved youth.
The final phase of the visit took place in the Chennai Province from February 13 to 17. Activities included meetings with provincial leadership, youth gatherings with participants from Chennai and Puducherry, and visits to social welfare initiatives serving vulnerable young people. In the Tirupattur region, the Rector Major participated in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Sacred Heart College and engaged in formation-related programmes. Reports also noted his pastoral visit to Polur on February 15.
Throughout the journey, Salesian communications highlighted unity, renewal of mission and holistic education as key priorities. The 2026 spiritual theme, “Do whatever He tells you,” was presented as a guiding call to discernment and action in service of young people.
The Salesians have a long-standing presence in Northeast India, with early provincial developments historically linked to Shillong and later expansion across the region. Leadership visits of this scale are viewed within the broader South Asian context, reflecting the congregation’s shared mission across provinces.
The February programme marked the Rector Major’s first official visit to India since assuming leadership of the Salesian Congregation.
