Guwahati, February 26, 2026: World Youth Day (WYD) 2027 will be held in Seoul, South Korea, from August 3–8, marking the first time the global Catholic youth gathering will take place in a country where Christians are a minority.
Established by St. John Paul II in 1984 as the “Jubilee of Youth,” World Youth Day has since become a regular international event, convened every two to four years. It brings together young people from across the world for prayer, catechesis and celebration of faith. Over the decades, the gathering has drawn large international participation and has played a significant role in youth evangelization.
Seoul 2027 will be only the second World Youth Day hosted in Asia, following Manila in 1995. The Philippines event recorded one of the largest religious gatherings in history. The upcoming celebration in South Korea introduces a new historical context, as Catholics comprise about 12 percent of the national population, with Christians overall representing roughly 30 percent.
Church leaders have noted that hosting WYD in Seoul reflects the universality of the Church and its presence in diverse cultural and religious settings. The Catholic community in Korea has a distinctive history. In the late 18th century, Korean lay scholars encountered Christian writings through Western texts and embraced the faith before the arrival of foreign missionaries. By the time a priest reached Korea in 1795, several thousand Catholics were already practicing the faith.
The Church in Korea endured periods of persecution during the 18th and 19th centuries, yet the community continued to grow. Today, the Catholic Church in South Korea is active in pastoral, educational and charitable initiatives.
The theme chosen for World Youth Day 2027 is drawn from John 16:33: “Take courage! I have overcome the world.” The biblical focus invites young people to deepen their faith and witness amid contemporary challenges.
By convening in Seoul, World Youth Day 2027 will provide an opportunity for young Catholics to experience the Church’s global communion and to engage with a local Church shaped by perseverance, faith and missionary spirit.
