Guwahati, March 3, 2026: Salesian youth ministry must be firmly rooted in the Gospel and carried out in collaboration with diocesan structures, said General Councillor for Youth Ministry, Fr. Raphael Bejarano SDB, at Don Bosco Institute, Kharghuli on 2 March 2026.
Addressing the Youth Services (YS) Coordinators, young leaders, and representatives of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM), Fr. Bejarano stressed that Salesian initiatives are not primarily about organising events but about forming young people in faith and responsibility.
“The values that come from the Gospel are the foundation of our activities,” he said. Enthusiasm alone does not define Salesian identity, clarified Fr. Bejarano.
“Love for Don Bosco is not only shouting ‘Viva Don Bosco’ or organizing joyful activities.
It is loving young people, accompanying them in society, and working with them to change the world.”
Fr. Bejarano emphasized that members of SYM are called to live Gospel values concretely and become agents of positive change in their communities. He urged youth leaders to walk with young people, build meaningful relationships, and engage actively in social transformation inspired by Don Bosco.
He further stated that Salesian spirituality is not confined to institutions or formal structures. It is a way of life shaped by pastoral charity and service.
“Live the Don Bosco spirit even when you are no longer formally part of the Salesian society,” he encouraged, underlining that the charism must continue beyond organized groups.
Responding to questions about SYM and other youth groups, Fr. Bejarano highlighted the need for ecclesial communion. Salesian youth ministry, he said, must collaborate with diocesan structures and contribute to the broader pastoral mission of the Church.
“It is important for us to work under the Local Church… We can and must work together.”
The session concluded with a renewed understanding that Salesian youth ministry must remain Gospel-centred, socially engaged, and fully integrated within the life and mission of the Church.
